Wildcraft Medicine 21 Day Detox Program: Why Resetting Your System Is So Important

Fall is here! It is time to get balanced and clear out the clutter that is no longer serving us. This refers to things around the house but also to our bodies. We are constantly bombarded with toxins and pollutants in the air, food, and water. Luckily our bodies are primed to deal with these sorts of burdens but it is critical to help support it. Like any running machine our bodies need to be supported and cleaned out once in a while to make sure all the parts are working efficiently.

The organs that deal with processing and removing toxins on a daily basis include the liver, kidneys, colon, lungs, lymph, and the skin. Collectively these organs are emunctories- that is they help filter and clean our bodies!

So how do you know if you need to support your detox pathways? Here are some signs that may shed some light.

Signs You Could Benefit from a Detox Program

  • Fatigue
  • Cognitive problems
  • Mood Swings/Depression
  • Acne, Rosacea, Itchy skin
  • High cholesterol/triglycerides
  • Weight gain/Inability to Lose weight
  • Digestive problems
  • Blood sugar crashes/Sugar Cravings
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Immune problems
  • Excess sweating/Body odor
  • Yellow coating on tongue/Bad breath

The Liver:

Being exposed to too many toxins can slow down the liver’s detoxification capability, leading to an increase in toxins in the brain. The brain, breasts, and adrenal glands are high fat organs with a particular vulnerability to toxin damage.

Stages of Liver Detoxification

  1. Phase 1: Oxidation reduction and hydrolysis catalyzed by P450
  2. Phase 2: The liver conjugates metabolites from phase 1 by adding additional molecules to render them harmless and water soluble so they can be excreted from the body.

Important Nutrients in Detoxification

Phase 1:

  • B vitamins
  • Glutathione
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin A
  • D3
  • Quercitin
  • Calcium

Phase 2

  • Calcium D glucurate
  • Glutamine
  • Cysteine
  • Lysine
  • Glycine
  • Carnitine
  • Taurine
  • MSM

How It All Works:

Phase 1 metabolites must be further metabolized by phase 2 to make them non-toxic and ready for elimination. When too many toxins upregulate the phase 1 pathway or there aren’t enough nutrients available for phase 2 pathway, high levels of free radicals are produced causing cellular damage.

Nutrients can become depleted as detox pathways are constantly being upregulated (turned on). There is overlap between nutrients used for detoxification and nutrients used to produce cellular energy (Krebs cycle/ATP). As these nutrients and antioxidants get depleted by the liver, there are less available to the mitochondria (energy producer of the cell). The mitochondria get damaged and slow down, leading to fatigue and cellular dysfunction.

Weight gain can often be a downstream effect of toxin overload. As the liver becomes sluggish, it can promote insulin resistance, which can promote weight gain (especially around the middle). Furthermore, some toxins act as “endocrine disruptors”. This means they act on the same hormone receptors as our hormones do without carrying the same vital information. These can lead to hormonal imbalances and weight gain.

Toxins can directly affect our gut microbiome. Dysbiois, an imbalance in our resident microbiome, can affect hormone balance and metabolism, gastrointestinal function, inflammation, mood/neurotransmitters, and our immune response.

Detoxing Properly

  • Toxins are stored in fat – Before starting a weight loss program it is a good idea to get detox pathways up and running
  • First make sure both phase 1 and phase 2 detox pathways are being supported
  • Make sure that digestion is functioning optimally and bowels are being moved at least once per day

Wildcraft Medicine 21 Detox Program

This 21 day detox program was put together to help support all the phases of detoxification as well as support elimination of toxins, decreasing inflammation in the gut, and supporting nutrient and energy levels. It’s a great way to reset your system and get back on track. It comes with labwork for individualizing your health, a consult with one of the Naturopathic Doctors, supplements, a diet plan and IM injections. Learn more about our program below:

Micronutrient Panel

According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 93% of the US population do not meet the estimated average requirement (EAR) for vitamin E, 56% for magnesium, 44% for vitamin A, 31% for vitamin C, 14% for vitamin B6, and 12% for zinc (13).

Women of child bearing age were also at higher risk of deficiencies in folate, vitamin D, iron.

Even when we eat a well-balanced nutrient rich diet, we can still suffer from one or more nutrient deficiencies due to factors such as:

  • Stress
  • Genetic abnormalities in folate metabolism
  • Medication use
  • Stress
  • Digestion and absorption issues

Screening for micronutrient deficiencies using this panel allows us to create individualized nutrition protocols to optimize your detoxification pathways, energy metabolism, hormones, neurotransmitters and more!

The Spectracell micronutrient panel measures 31 vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and metabolites:

Nutrient Injections

  • B12: Cofactor in fatty acid metabolism
    • Also important for adrenal health, neurotransmitter production, and methylation cycle
    • Difficult to absorb via the diet
  • MIC: Lipotrophic Injection, Supports fat metabolism
    • Methionine: Amino acid crucial for glutathione production and in production of SAMe (methylation)
    • Inositol: Acts synergistically with choline to repair the liver
      • Improves insulin sensitivity
    • Choline: Component of phosphatiylcholine, a constituent of our cell membranes
      • Helpful in liver repair as hepatic regeneration requires high levels of cell membrane synthesis
      • Detoxes excess estrogen

Supplements

  • Mediclear
    • 20 grams of protein per serving, multi-mineral/multi-vitamin profile, essential detox nutrients in their most absorbable and active forms, and detox promoting herbs
      • P5P – active B6, Methylcobalamin – active B12, LMTHF – active folate
      • Glutamine, choline, glutathione
      • Milk thistle and curcumin
    • Amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are essential for the phase 2 detox pathways.
      • Glutathione is made up of the amino acids cysteine, glutamine, and glycine
      • The amino acid methionine is crucial for our methylation cycle, which helps recycle glutathione
  • Fiber (Raw Organic Fiber)
    • Recommended intake for fiber is around 25-30 grams, but most people do not consume more than 15 grams
    • Adequate fiber and hydration help promote regular bowel movements
    • Dietary fiber serves as fertilizer for the healthy microflora we want in our gastrointestinal tract. We lack the enzymes to fully break it down, however the bacteria can. It becomes fermented to form short chain fatty acids, which in turn fuel our enterocytes in the gastrointestinal lining. Without this fuel, they produce less of the protective mucus coating and pathogen-killing proteins we need.
  • Detox Support Formula
    • Herbal blend of liver cleansers and tonifiers
    • Bitter herbs also promote secretion of bile and digestive enzymes in the digestive tract
  • Magnesium (Calm Magnesium Powder)
    • A cofactor in over 600 reactions in your body! Important role in energy production, bone and teeth health, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, blood pressure, and activating enzymes that assists the body absorb and use fats, proteins and carbohydrates
    • During periods of high stress, we lose more magnesium in our urine. When levels of Mg drop, the stress response threshold gets lower. Magnesium can decrease the release of ACTH as well as decrease the adrenals response to ACTH (the hormone released from the pituitary that tells the hypothalamus to release cortisol)
    • Binds to GABA receptors in the brain to decrease anxiety and promote restful sleep
    • This form of magnesium draws water into the stool to help stimulate regular bowel movements
  • Ther-biotic Complete Probiotic Powder
    • Broad-spectrum, high-CFU, multispecies probiotic supplement containing 12 probiotic microbial species
    • InTactic® acid-stable delivery technology, a proprietary hypoallergenic polysaccharide complex from seaweed, protects microorganisms during transit through the acidic gastric environment
    • Probiotics synthesize vitamin K, folate, biotin, and B12
    • When the microbiome becomes imbalanced, levels of the enzyme beta-glucuronidase rise. This enzyme breaks the conjugate bond formed during phase 2 of liver detoxification, allowing toxins and hormones to be reabsorbed into the blood stream.
  • Glutathione
    • The body’s master antioxidant
    • It recycles the body’s other antioxidants like vitamin C and E, keeping them in their reduced/active form
    • It helps during liver detox to make toxins, medication, and hormones water soluble
    • Neutralizes lipid peroxides’ break down products from fatty acids in our cell membranes
    • Neutralizes H202 production in our mitochondria (a free radical byproduct of normal cellular respiration/energy production)
    • It is depleted by toxins, medications, alcohol, stress, infections, aging and trauma
    • Trizomal Glutathione from Apex contains S-acetly L-glutathione to provide intracellular glutathione, N-Acetyl L-cysteine to support intracellular biosynthesis of glutathione, and reduced glutathione to provide intracellular and extracellular glutathione. The formula contains a double liposomal layer to protect the glutathione molecules and increase absorption/bioavailability.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet Plan:

  • A guided diet plan aimed at cutting down inflammation in the body by avoiding the main foods that cause inflammation and adding in foods that support detox pathways and overall health.
  • Main foods to eliminate: gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol, corn, eggs
